32 – Break it down to get it done. Making video games with Karyl Gilbertson.

"A big project is very daunting but if you can break it down into smaller pieces they get easier to wrap your head around." — Karyl Gilbertson

Today’s interview is with Karyl Gilbertson. Karyl is a Web designer by day and in the evenings is creating Arkaia: The Mysterious Island — his own first person adventure game inspired in part by his love of the Myst games. The beginning of our talk is a little technical but I’ve put links to all the things we talk about in the show notes at TheSparkAndTheArt.com/32. We also talk about the challenge of finding time to do a project as large as a computer game basically as a one man shop all while working full time and being the father of a 2 and half year old.

He doesn’t just complain about lack of time though. Karyl has some tactics he uses to motivate himself and how to keep such a large project manageable. This includes the need to break large projects down into smaller chunks.

I’m sure you’ll find something in today’s talk with Karyl that will help inspire you to move forward with any project you are currently working on.

If you already break down your projects into smaller chunks I’d love to know your big takeaway from today’s talk, find me on twitter @sh_tucker

Do you know someone who’s struggling because their project is getting to big? Do you think anything Karyl talks about today might help them figure out how to break down their project into smaller chunks?
