Create for yourself first. Then share it with someone else.

Create for yourself first. Then share it with someone else.

TheSparkAndTheArt.com/19 - Last week’s podcast was an interview with Thi Vo. A film maker finishing his documentary about travelling Vietnam to find his birth father.

During our chat he gave this quote “Doing creative things is about experiencing things for yourself and, if you can, share it with others.”

Making something just for you is as important an idea as any other idea out there.

Sometimes when you create something it’s your favourite thing ever. You’re a genius and you can’t believe anything so awesome has never been created before. That is a magical and wondrous feeling. You can’t wait to show it to everyone and sometimes when you do they give a little smiling nod and say “Nice.”

Nice? NICE?! This is the single greatest piece of human creation to date. Future students will write a thesis on this and celebrate it for the wonder of creative achievement that it is!

Other times you show something in progress and they love it. “That’s Spectacular! OMG Shiela come look at this marvellous thing!”

What? Can’t you see it still needs work? Can’t you see it hasn’t found it’s soul yet? Marvellous? Pfffttt.

In the interview with singer/songwriter Jonathan Ferguson he said “I have to like it … But I’d rather someone else like it.” In order for his song to feel complete he has to like it. In order for him to continue to perform it he has to like it. In order for it to be recorded he has to like it. But, he’d rather someone else like it. Their enjoyment of the the thing he created is what keeps him creating new things. Does this mean that if no one liked his songs he’d stop writing. Probably not. I’d have to ask him but I’m pretty sure that even if no one ever heard another Jonathan Ferguson song it wouldn’t stop him writing them.

Let’s go back to Thi’s quote “Doing creative things is about experiencing things for yourself and, if you can, share it with others.”

If you create things for yourself first you have given yourself joy and made your life a little better. It’s your life you may as well make it better if you can. Then, if you then share it with someone you have made the world a little better.

The world is better because what you create is a part of it. Keep creating.

This is where you get to do some thinking. What is it you want to create? Are you having trouble getting started because you’re not sure if people will like it? Are you scared to continue because you’re not sure if others will like it as much as you? What would happen if you finished and didn’t show anyone? Is the reason you’re doing your thing to make someone else happy or to make yourself happy?

Do you know someone who is having trouble finishing or sharing what they’ve created? Please share this episode with them. The share URL is TheSparkAndTheArt.com/19. You’ll help out the podcast and your friend in one single email. Or tweet. Or facebook link. However you decide to share it is up to you. I’m not here to tell you how to use the internet.

Thanks for listening and remember. You won’t get the art without the work and you won’t do the work without the spark.
