143 - The power of creating your own work with Samantha Duff

Hello and welcome to the The Spark & The Art creativity podcast. Thank you for subscribing to our weekly podcast, where we alternate between interviews with creative folks from all different career levels and insight and inspiration episodes. All with the intention you’ll get what you need to get your creative projects started and, more importantly, finished.

I’m your host Tucker and this week is an interview with the founder of a local children’s theatre company Samantha Duff.

In today’s chat we talk about what led Samantha or Sam (but never Sammy) to start her own theatre company and specifically a family theatre with a mandate to ensure theatre is financially accessible to all.

Samantha talks about her starting our doing everything from building sets, sound design, directing and acting with her and her founding partner Holleay to now including more people in the productions. We talk about what it means to let go of some of that work and what it allowed her to do to help grow her theatre.

Samantha also talks about what it’s like working with kids. You can here her enthusiasm and passion as she talks. It reminds me of our episode with elementary school art teacher Lorian Dean in episode  97.

So let’s get right into our talk with Samantha Duff.

Do you know someone who’s feeling a little sorry for themselves because they can’t seem to find the work they want to do? I’d hope you’d share this episode with them and maybe they’d be inspired to create their own work.

The easiest way to share is to use the short url that fits perfectly in tweet or text message TheSparkAndTheArt.com/143 and the hardest way to share is to travel to indonesia and have the url written on a grain of rice by a road side artisan and wear it as a necklace and hope that your friend notices they come over to watch the slide show of your trip.

Get me on twitter @sparkartpodcast

Thanks for listening and remember: you won’t get the art without the work and you won’t do the work without the spark.
