119 - Rely on your foundation and serve your customer with illustrator Michael Grills

Hello and welcome to the The Spark & The Art creativity podcast. Thank you for subscribing to our weekly podcast, where we alternate between interviews with creative folks from all different career levels and insight and inspiration episodes. All with the intention you’ll get what you need to get your creative projects started and, more importantly, finished.

I’m your host Tucker and this week is an interview with illustrator Michael Grills. Michael has been a professional illustrator for nearly 20 years and has a very clear vision of what it means to be an illustrator: Rely on your foundation and serve your customer. Those aren’t his words those are mine so he may describe it a little differently but that’s what I got out of the conversation.

In today’s chat we talk about Michael's time at the video game company Bioware, why he thinks the alumni of Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) can be so successful and how his career choice works in his family.

We also talk about taking responsibility for your own career and skills. There is no blame for anything coming from Michael and you’ll hear it when we talk about art schools preparing students for running a business.

I’m confident you will enjoy today’s talk with illustrator Michael Grills.

Do you know someone who is working at being a professional illustrator? It would be selfish of you not to share today’s episode with them. The easiest way to share it is to send the short url TheSparkAndTheArt.com/119. The hardest way would be to drag your feet across and barren field marking a transcription of the episode in the soil then taking your friend on a hot air balloon ride and hope they look down and read it all before the wind continues you on your trip.

Get me on twitter @sparkartpodcast or leave your own version of the hardest way to share a podcast at 1-877-966-4886 leave your name and website and I’ll play it on a future episode.

Thanks for listening and remember: you won’t get the art without the work and you won’t do the work without the spark.
